One sunny side of modern technology that has changed the software landscape is the concept of open ecosystems. From one software vendor who either has to have a wide range of services to cover as many business needs as possible, to ten different vendors and also ten different applications that are all independent of each other... we now have what is called the API economy. I'm not a technical person myself, I'll try to explain this in a way that I would understand the concept. But let's start from the beginning: What is an API? API stands for Application Programming Interface (I'm impressed if you've heard this abbreviation before).
But more importantly, how do they make our lives easier? Basically, an API is a bundle of code that bridges digital services and allows one application or platform to access information or functionality from another. In short: APIs enable the connection of different digital services. So instead of having to go to one big vendor that offers everything, build everything from scratch or have ten different applications that fulfill your different business needs on ten different platforms, you can just run your ten different applications from different vendors on one platform. Magic, science, whatever you want to call it!
Thanks to the API economy, we now have this open ecosystem. Software providers can simply specialize in providing services that they are best at and the customer can choose what suits their business needs. It's (mostly) cost-effective and definitely more user-friendly.
